Let’s Table This Discussion
“I want a new table. I’m sick of this one, it’s warped and the finish is ruined. Plus, I’m tired of the whole tablecloth thing.” This pronouncement, like most of my pronouncements, was met with the usual, “Hmm…” and a hint of a nod, a tried and true method learned from years of experience with other not-so-peaceful methods. Because, really, any comments along the line of, “There’s nothing wrong with that table. You could refinish it, you know. Tables are expensive,” would just result in counter statements and heated exchanges, when merely waiting until my mood changed, knowing I would never actually go out and buy one, would take care of the whole situation. Satisfied with the hmmm and nod reply, I set about googling tables and soon tired of the whole thing. A couple of hours later, we made it around the block for coffee and a belated Christmas thing, armed with masks and chocolate pie, and no sooner had I sat down when someone asked, “Do you want a table? We have one we’re getting rid of. It’s an antique.” Wait, what? So, I trooped out in the garage to have a look and there, staring back at me, was this amazing little mahogany masterpiece, complete with matching chairs. “Yes, I’ll take it,” I said. It was all a little surreal. Imagine announcing you wanted something and then having it handed to you a few hours later! So, now, I’m sitting here thinking about what else I’d like around here. Maybe it’s like a three wish thing! Maybe you should try it, too. Start small with something like, “I want an old warped table and a bunch of tablecloths.” Then, come see me. And bring pie.
